Bursledon Woodland Park Trust

The Trust

The aim of the Woodland Park Trust (currently registered as the Woodland Park Community Group - see History) is to conserve and improve the Woodland Park for public benefit.

The trust is managed by the Trustees, who are appointed at AGMs.

 History

The Woodland Park was officially opened in 2003 by the Mayor of Eastleigh and wildlife TV presenter Chris Packham.  This folllowed the transfer of ownership from Bursledon Church of England Infants School to the Woodland Park Community Group in July 2002.

Prior to 2002:

  • In 1998, Bursledon Rights of Way and Amenities Preservation Group (BROWAPG) developed a Millenium Green Proposal
  • Possibility of Parish Council taking over responsibility for the site's management (offer later withdrawn over maintenance concerns)
  • Improvement plan drawn up by the Itchen Hamble Countryside Project (IHCP)
  • In 2001, Pilands Wood Residents Association, with the support of the Neighbourhood Community Worker, drew together a multi-agency group to progress the purchase of the site and the implementation of the IHCP plan.  The multi-agency group included the Community Association, Borough Council, IHCP, Housing Associations, Parish Council, Eastleigh Community Services, Hampshire Wildlife Trust, and Tree Wardens
  • Formal offer to purchase the property made in May 2001.
  • Inaugural meeting of the Woodland Park Community Group held in June 2001.

The 2017 AGM saw the existing Woodland Park Community Group trustees standown (after many years service).  Seven BROWAPG members were elected as new trustees.

The Area

Woodland Park is a four-acre site of ancient woodland situated within the Old Bursledon Conservation Area to the rear of the Fox and Hounds, between Hungerford, School Road and Pilands Wood.

Made up of mixed native broadleaf trees with Victorian specimen conifer planting, the Park contains hidden iron slag heaps from the 18th Century.
